Ulysses - The Ultimate Writing App App Reviews

Having used and loved the iPad variant for a great while Ive been waiting and waiting and waiting for Ulysses to come to the iPhone. And to be candid it has been difficult to remain patient -- I began to seriously doubt it would come to fruition. *Well holy carp its here!* And so far its fantastic. It can be very challenging to bring a non trivial app like this to the form factor of a phone -- and be useful -- and be intuitive -- whilst sporting the key functionality of its big bother. *Well damn, youve done it, kudos!* And yes, for fun I wrote this review in Ulysses.

EDIT - March 10, 2016 And there it is. Ulysses for iPhone. Youve done it again. Beautiful work, Soulmen. The iPhone version is stellar. Very intuitive. Its of the calibre Ive come to expect from yourselves. Full marks. -------- Just as good as the OS X version. And thats saying a lot, because the OS X version is a thing of beauty. Waiting eagerly for Ulysses for iPhone.

This version looks spectacular. The iPad pro and the touch controls are well thought out. I was surprised to see how functional it was on my iPod touch.

Very easy to use and to learn for new users. Notes are easily organized and exported in common formats. Highly recommend purchasing this if you write frequently.

Ive used them all, but Ulysses is the most polished, capable, and (yes) enjoyable writing app Ive tried.

I agonized over a multitude of writing tools for authors, tried most of them (such as Scrivener and Storyist) BUT Ulysses on Mac OS is simply the best for my needs. It is truly an excellent writing tool that excels in helping you achieving your writing goals. Simple, elegant and intuitive to use - no complicated learning curve needed. HOWEVER, when you combine Ulysses for Mac OS with their newest iOS version - it is nothing short of Amazing. Ulysses likes to keep you documents in one file. One big, corruptable, deletable file, which is backed up on iCloud. If you like working this way on the Mac, the iPhone version will work well for you. I dont like working this way. One of the advantages of working in text and Markdown is that your files are easily edited in any program. On the Mac, Ulysses will accommodate my preferences. I keep text files in an "external folder" on Dropbox. On iPhone, however, Ulysses cant open Dropbox file. They say its a limitation of Dropbox. If so, it doesnt affect the Nebulous app, which is what I now to use to open and edit my Ulysses text files from the Mac which are saved on Dropbox. Ulysses for OSX has many excellent features for working with loose text files. But if thats how you work, and you like your files on Dropbox, Ulysses for iPhone is not for you.

Ulysses is a well built writing application that covers all the bases: hierarchical project organization, a distraction-free writing environment, terrific external keyboard support, and great customizability of both the writing environment and the output styles. On top of this, theres built-in iCloud sync and versioned backups so you dont lose any of your work. If you write, and youd like to do it on a mobile device, this is the application for you. No, its not the cheapest, but in exchange for the very reasonable price youre getting a serious tool for serious work made by people who know what theyre doing. Ulysses makes your iPad into a real writing tool, and if youre a thumb ninja you can do everything on your iPhone or iPod Touch too. Absolutely five stars.

Ulysses is still my favourite text editor on iOS. The addition of the search feature closes one of the few functionality holes that were left for me.

Yeah its that good, and the devs arent sitting on their hands either. The app continues to be extended and polished. If you love to write while on an IOS device youre now lucky to have several great choices -- Ulysses, Scrivener, 1Writer, Editorial -- and of these Ulysses is my favourite by a significant margin. Thats quite a feat because these other contenders are serious, full featured professionally written programs. Way to go Soulmen!

A pleasure to use. Im not a writer or a reviewer, just a casual user with an eye that appreciates the aesthetic of this app and the attention to detail in an elegant design and interface. Having it available on iPad, Mac and now iPhone is a bonus. There are many in depth reviews for a variety of use cases, all most complimentary. Mine in a word is "Excellent".

Mac版も使用しているので良さは知っています。iPhoneでも似たUIで編集できるとなると最高ですね。ずっと待ってました！ テキストエディタなんて標準アプリで事足りないこともないですが、いつも使うものとなると使っていて楽しいものが良いですよね。私の場合、Ulyssesがそれです。

Love this app! It is everything it should be but it has some major iCloud sync problems. If I do something on my Mac and 5 mins later want to continue it on my iPhone I cant. I have looked at their faq about iCloud sync and did everything right but it still doesnt sync. I really wish they had a sync now option. I would give this a 5 star rating but these syncing issues make it a 3 star app for me. Syncing is very important and after spending 2400yen on this app I would have thought it wouldnt have such problems. I really hope the developer can get this issue solved. Update: Thanks to the great support from the developers I got my iCloud issues worked out and now can enjoy this app more. The issue was on the Mac side, I was using a cleaning app that seemed to be getting in the way of iCloud syncing properly.

The App is really great. But managing the footnotes is awkward especially for academic purpose (you should allow to see and modify all the footnotes in a general view)

Ulysses surpassed all expectations. Been looking for a intuitive writing software that handles text organization intelligently. Ulysses groups, sheets, splitting, gluing and merging took all of an hour to get comfortable with. Best outline software there is for Iphone. Writing is no longer a burden as Ulysses makes the creative process streamlined. Ulysses for iPhone is worth the price whether you are a Cloud user or if you want to do all your work offline.
